I have constantly been told that the best way to find out if you enjoy something is to try it; as a first year student, however, I have realized that when it comes to career paths, this phrase is easier said than done. Studying the broad field of media and communications in Western’s Media Information & Technology (MIT) program, I find myself constantly overwhelmed with the endless paths I can take and the few opportunities there are to explore these paths hands on. Constantly researching ways to dip my toes into the industry, I came across the MYK Internship program – a six-month long digital marketing internship that focuses on building skills essential for keeping up in the evolving industry of marketing. MYK Websites, founded by Michael Kim, a third year student attending Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario, assists companies in creating effective online platforms using website development programs such as WordPress. Understanding the constant struggle students face to get hands on experience, Michael created a digital marketing internship open to students in London who are eager to learn skills in website development, digital marketing, and entrepreneurship. Unlike other internships, little proficiency is required as the focus is rather placed on experimentation, development and the creation of relations through clientele experience.
As a current intern for the digital marketing program, I can say that Michael has an ideal program set up for those who are eager to test out as many careers as possible. Starting in January, interns are taught the basics about social media and the ability it has to create success. Next month, students learn through doing; primarily using WordPress, interns will explore themes, modules and plugins that are required to make a successful website. In March, Michael will explore effective marketing strategies such as search engine optimization, blogging, email marketing and more. In April, time will be dedicated to the concepts of inbound marketing. Finally, in May and June, interns will shift their focus to sales and product management allowing them to think of ways they too can create a successful business with the skills they’ve gained.
Working with successful entrepreneurs, the digital marketing internship gives students a chance to be inspired by others and develop the skills they would need to be just as successful. After only 3 months in the program, I feel as though I have gained worthwhile relations and skills that could not be gained elsewhere. Now confident in my abilities, I am comfortable with what I have learned and glad to have explored this particular career path.
